چکیده

We introduce a continuous modeling approach which combines elastic responds of the trabecular bone structure, the concentration of signaling mole-cules within the bone and a mechanism how this concentration at the bone surface is used for local bone formation and resorption. In an abstract setting bone can be considered as a shape changing structure. For similar problems in materials science phase field approximations have been established as an efficient computational tool. We adapt such an approach for trabecular bone remodeling. It allows for a smooth representation of the trabecular bone structure and drastically reduces computational costs if compared with traditional micro finite element approaches. We demonstrate the advantage of the approach within a minimal model. We quantitatively compare the results with established micro finite element approaches on simple geometries and consider the bone morphology within a bone segment obtained from μCT data of a sheep vertebra with realistic parameters.

Mandibular Trabecular Bone Analysis Using Local Binary Pattern for Osteoporosis Diagnosis

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Since Panoramic image is a feasible and relatively routine imaging technique in dentistry; it could provide an opportunistic chance for screening osteoporosis. In this regard, numerous...

P-181: Protective Role of Vitamin E As An Alternative Treatment for Ovariectomized Osteoporotic Rats

Background: Osteoporosis one of the postmenopausal symptoms is characterized by bone loss. There is a link between excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, estrogen deficiency due to cessation of ovarian function and bone loss. Free radicals are responsible for causing osteoblast apoptosis and reducing osteoblastogenesis in bone remodeling. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant with the a...

The metaphyseal bone defect in distal radius fractures and its implication on trabecular remodeling—a histomorphometric study (case series)

BACKGROUND The invention of the locking plate technology leads to alterations of treatment strategies at metaphyseal fracture sites with the concept of spontaneous remodeling of trabecular bone voids. Whereas trabecular regeneration has been proven in experimental animal studies, no histologic data exist on human fracture healing with special emphasis on bone voids. METHODS In order to qualif...

Trabecular surface remodeling simulation for cancellous bone using microstructural voxel finite element models.

A computational simulation method for three-dimensional trabecular surface remodeling was proposed, using voxel finite element models of cancellous bone, and was applied to the experimental data. In the simulation, the trabecular microstructure was modeled based on digital images, and its morphological changes due to surface movement at the trabecular level were directly expressed by removing/a...

Numerical instabilities in bone remodeling simulations: the advantages of a node-based finite element approach.

Long bone structure occurs in two distinct forms. The bone mass near the joint is primarily found in a distributed, porous trabecular structure, while in the diaphyses a tubular cortical structure is formed. It seems likely that these two observed morphologies come about, at least in part, as a mechanical adaptation to the different mechanical demands in the two regions. Mathematical formulatio...
